Calabria's main city is Cosenza, which provides a good base for exploring La Sila, one of the last great stretches of European forest still intact.
Tourism will be the future for Calabria, with holiday resorts growing up on the extensive Tyrrhenian and Ionian coastlines. Towns such as Scalea, Tropea, Maratea, Diamante and Praia a Mare make the most of the superb sunny weather, sandy beaches and warm sea.
There are many Greek and Roman remains in the region, and untouched beaches shelter beneath precipitous roads clinging to the mountainside.

Calabria offers a wide range of activities for sports enthusaiasts of all kinds and the water sports facilities are second to none.
Windsurfing, scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing and deep sea fishing are all popular, as is lazing on one of the plentiful sun-drenched beaches.

In the winter months you can ski in central Calabria's mountainous region and birdwatching and trekking are popular in the stunning national parks n spring and summer.
