Climate and weather in Crete

The climate of the island is definitely Mediterranean, with an average annual temperature of 19ºC. Studies have shown that the climate of Crete is one of the healthiest in the world. Winter is mild, with snow on the mountains and plenty of rain in the plains but still a good deal of sunshine. The combination of rain and relative warmth make it one of the greenest places in the Mediterranean, especially in spring. The summers are hot and dry, particularly on the south coast. Being a mountainous island, weather changes can be sudden and it is often windy.
